The short version
- A 50 amp RV outlet is a NEMA 14-50 receptacle on a dedicated 120/240 volt circuit. It is a different animal from the 30 amp TT-30 outlet, which is 120 volt only.

Every August, Black Hills driveways turn into RV parks
The rally brings roughly half a million people into a town of about seven thousand, and the overflow lands everywhere from Belle Fourche to Hermosa. Campgrounds fill first. After that it is private land: pastures, shop lots, side yards, and a lot of driveways belonging to people who figured out that a flat spot near a house is worth something for ten days in August.
The part that catches people out is power. A rig parked on your gravel is fine. A rig parked on your gravel running two air conditioners off a garage outlet and a hundred feet of orange cord is a problem, and it is the kind of problem that does not announce itself until something gets hot.
If you are going to host rigs more than once, a permanent RV outlet is the fix. Here is what actually goes into one.
30 amp or 50 amp: what your rig actually needs
These two get used interchangeably in conversation and they are not the same service at all.

The most common misunderstanding is that a TT-30 is a 240 volt outlet because it has three prongs and a 30 amp breaker. It is not. It is a single 120 volt leg, and that is the whole reason a 50 amp rig running off an adapter still browns out when the second air conditioner kicks on.
Adapters do exist and they work in one direction. A dogbone adapter lets a 50 amp rig draw from a 30 amp source, but the rig is capped at what the source can deliver. Nobody has ever solved a capacity problem with an adapter.
What a NEMA 14-50 receptacle actually is
NEMA 14-50 is a four slot, 50 amp, 125/250 volt configuration. Two hot slots, one neutral, one ground. It is what you find on RV pedestals in every campground in the country, it is what older ranges plug into, and it is the default connection for a plug-in Level 2 electric vehicle charger. One receptacle, three very different jobs, which is worth remembering later on this page.
Requirements for RV sites and RV park electrical supply live in Article 551 of the National Electrical Code. A single outlet on a private property is not an RV park, but the sizing logic and the receptacle configuration come from the same place.
Sizing the circuit is a calculation, not a guess
A 50 amp, 240 volt circuit is 12 kilowatts of capacity. Four things determine what an electrician runs to feed it:
- Distance. An RV pad is rarely next to the panel. A run out to a pad 120 feet from the house behaves differently from a run of 20 feet, because voltage drop scales with length. The NEC includes an informational note recommending branch circuits be held to about three percent voltage drop, and on long runs that recommendation is what pushes conductors up a size or two beyond the minimum ampacity.
- Conductor material and temperature rating. Copper and aluminum are sized differently, and the terminations on the breaker and the receptacle set which temperature column in the ampacity tables applies. Six AWG copper is a common answer for a 50 amp circuit. It is not the automatic answer.
- Ambient conditions. Conduit in direct sun on the south side of a shop derates differently than the same conduit buried.
- What the house can actually give up. This is the one that stops projects.
That last point deserves its own paragraph. A lot of housing stock across the northern hills is on 100 amp service. Adding a 12 kilowatt circuit to a panel that is already running a well pump, an electric range, and a dryer is a load calculation question before it is a wiring question. Sometimes the answer is a 200 amp service upgrade first, and it is better to hear that in April than the week the rigs show up.
South Dakota inspects this work. South Dakota is one of a small number of states where electrical installations are permitted and inspected through a state electrical inspector rather than left to local jurisdictions alone. Permits received on or after November 12, 2024 are inspected under the 2023 National Electrical Code.1
A permitted, inspected outlet also matters if you are renting the spot out. An uninspected 50 amp circuit feeding a guest’s rig is a conversation you do not want to have with an insurance adjuster.
The receptacle is where cheap installs fail
The NEC defines a continuous load as one where the maximum current is expected to run for three hours or more. RV shore power qualifies most nights. EV charging qualifies almost every time.
A standard residential grade NEMA 14-50 receptacle was designed around a range: high current for an hour on Thanksgiving, low current the rest of the year. Put it on a load that pulls hard for eight hours a night, all week, and the failure mode is predictable. The contacts heat. Heat relaxes the spring tension in the contacts. Looser contacts mean more resistance, which means more heat. Run that cycle enough times and you get discoloration around the slots, then a smell, then a melted face.
The fix is not complicated and it is not expensive relative to the job. An industrial or commercial grade 14-50 receptacle uses heavier contact material and holds tension under repeated cycling. It costs several times what the builder grade version costs and it is a rounding error on the total install. Terminal torque matters just as much. Terminals have a specified torque value, and hand tight is not it.
The same outlet charges an electric vehicle
This is the piece almost nobody connects. The NEMA 14-50 receptacle you install for an RV is the same receptacle a plug-in Level 2 EV charger uses. If you are already trenching a circuit out to a pad, you are most of the way to Level 2 EV charger installation at the same location for very little additional cost.
There is a wrinkle worth understanding. The code treats EV supply equipment as a continuous load, which is why a 40 amp charger goes on a 50 amp circuit rather than a 40 amp one. Practically, that means an EV pulls close to the circuit’s working ceiling for hours at a stretch, which is harder duty than most RV usage. If you think there is any chance of both uses at that location, spec the circuit and the receptacle for the EV case. The RV will never notice the difference and the receptacle will last.
One trench, one time. The expensive part of an outdoor RV outlet is not the wire or the receptacle. It is the trenching, the conduit, and the labor. If you are opening the ground once, oversize the conduit and think about what else might need to live at that pad in five years: a second receptacle, a well, a shop subpanel, or a car charger.
GFCI protection is the question to ask
Ground fault protection requirements for 240 volt receptacles have moved across recent code cycles, and South Dakota has issued its own guidance and amendments on top of the adopted code. Whether a specific 50 amp outdoor receptacle needs GFCI protection depends on the code edition in force for your permit and on current state guidance.
This matters practically because ground fault devices and some RV and EV equipment do not always get along. Nuisance tripping on 50 amp circuits is a real and well documented headache, and the wrong answer is to remove the protection. The right answer is to have the conversation with a licensed electrician before the circuit is designed, not after your guest’s rig has tripped the breaker three nights running.
Cords are not a substitute for an outlet
The NEC is direct about this. Flexible cords are not permitted as a substitute for the fixed wiring of a structure, and that is exactly what a long term extension cord run to a parked rig is.
The consumer side of the picture backs it up. Roughly 3,300 home fires start in extension cords every year, causing about 50 deaths and 270 injuries, and running cords through snow or standing water is on every safety list for a reason.2 Heavy reliance on cords is a signal that a property needs another outlet, not a longer cord.
Outdoor rated means more than a plastic cover
A receptacle in a wet location needs a cover that stays weatherproof whether or not a plug is inserted. That is the difference between the flip lid you see on a lot of older exterior outlets and a proper in use cover, and for a 14-50 the cover has to be deep enough to close over an RV cord end, which is bulky.
A few other things that separate an install that survives a Black Hills winter from one that does not:
- Mount high enough to clear snow accumulation and drifting, not just high enough to be convenient in August.
- Use a pedestal or a post rather than the house wall if the pad is any real distance out, so the cord is not stretched at an angle across a driving surface.
- Burial depth and conduit type are specified by code and vary with what is above them. Under a driveway is a different requirement from under a lawn.
- UV rated conduit and fittings on anything exposed. Sun at elevation is hard on plastic.
- Seal the penetration. Freeze and thaw finds every gap eventually.
What this looks like as a job
A straightforward RV outlet on a house wall near an adequate panel is a short job. A pad 150 feet out from a 100 amp panel, under a gravel drive, on a property that also wants a car charger, is a different scope entirely and starts with a load calculation and a service conversation.
Either way the sequence is the same: evaluate the existing service, calculate the load, size the circuit for the actual distance, pull the permit, install, and get it inspected. Can I install a 50 amp RV outlet myself?
South Dakota permits and inspects electrical installations through a state electrical inspector, and there are limited homeowner permit provisions with their own conditions. Beyond the legal question, a 50 amp 240 volt circuit is one of the larger loads on a residential panel, and the two most common failure points are undersized conductors over distance and under torqued terminations. Both are invisible until they are not.
What size wire do I need for a 50 amp RV outlet?
Six AWG copper is common for a 50 amp circuit, but the correct size depends on the length of the run, the conductor material, the temperature rating of the terminations, and the installation conditions. Long runs out to a detached pad frequently require larger conductors than the minimum ampacity would suggest, because of voltage drop.
Will a 50 amp RV outlet work for an electric vehicle charger?
The NEMA 14-50 receptacle is the same, and most plug-in Level 2 chargers use it. The circuit needs to be designed with continuous load in mind, and the receptacle should be an industrial or commercial grade unit if it will see regular EV charging. If both uses are on the table, it costs very little extra to specify the circuit for the harder one from the start.
