Some homeowners prefer not to see outlets at all. They don’t want plastic covers breaking up a nice tile backsplash, or cover plates catching the light at the wrong angle. That is where plug mold installation comes in. It is a slim surface raceway that runs along the base of the backsplash and holds multiple outlets in a single, concealed track instead of individual boxes cut into the wall. On a recent kitchen job, that is exactly what the customer requested, and the installation was filmed from start to finish. It is a good example of how much small judgment calls shape a finish-level job like this one.

Layout and Preparation

Plug mold looks like a single clean piece once it is mounted, but getting there starts with holding the track in place and marking the cut point at the center of an outlet opening rather than wherever the run happens to end. The cut itself happens while the track is still fully assembled and the protective paper is still on, which keeps the finish protected through the messiest part of the job instead of exposing it too early.

From there, the track never touches the countertop directly. Instead, set it on cardboard. A finished countertop scratches easily, and there’s no undoing that once it happens. Where two sections need to join to form one continuous run, a small connector piece ties them together end to end.

A plug mold installation depends on getting these early steps right. Mounting holes are where it pays to ignore the factory defaults. Plug mold comes with holes already punched in the back, but those stock locations often land right where they would interfere with the back of the outlet device once it is installed. Marking and drilling new holes between each outlet opening, using a sharp bit so the finish does not chip going in, prevents problems from cropping later.

Wiring and Device Installation

A couple of hardware details matter more than they might appear to in any plug mold installation. End caps get pressed into the cut ends by hand rather than hammered, since a hard hit is a fast way to scuff paint that is supposed to look factory fresh once it is on the wall. Screw length matters just as much. It has to be shorter than whatever it is going into, or it will penetrate the finished surface on the opposite side. A cabinet bottom that is roughly half an inch thick needs a screw shorter than that, without exception.

The wiring itself becomes more involved with a modern device. This particular run used outlets with built-in USB charging, and the internal layout is tighter than a standard receptacle. Removing a device from the track is simple enough, since pushing on the face causes it to bend out. The lever-type splice connectors used to land the wires clamp a conductor in place with a flip of a lever, and they differ from a traditional twist-on wire connector. They do not always seat the same way in every device on the first try. Sometimes they need to be repositioned before the device will sit flush in its housing.

Routing matters as much as the connection itself. The hot conductor has to turn and slide underneath the ground terminal on one side, and the neutral conductors route under the ground on each side as well. Reversing that sequence keeps the device from seating flush back into the track, even when the splice itself is sound.

None of this shows up in the finished look of the job, but at the connection end of the run, the wires get trimmed slightly shorter and taped up before anything is closed in. This simple step protects the conductors and helps prevent arcing once everything is closed in.

Achieving a Proper Final Fit

When everything upstream has been done correctly, the last step barely feels like work. The track slides up tight against the end, seats from the back first, and the front snaps in with a light push. A properly designed device, such as the USB outlet used on this job, is built to make that final fit almost effortless. When it resists at the finish, that is usually a sign that something earlier in the process needs a second look rather than a reason to force it.
