Electrical Problems Are Easier To Fix When You Know What To Check
Most electrical problems announce themselves before they turn into a bigger repair. A breaker that trips again and again, an outlet that quit working, lights that dim when the furnace kicks on. Some have a simple cause. Others point to a loose connection, an overloaded circuit or a part that has worn out, and those are worth having a licensed electrician look at.
Wires R Us has served the Black Hills since 1999 and is now a second-generation electrical contractor. We repair homes and businesses in Rapid City, Box Elder, Sturgis, Spearfish, Deadwood, Lead and Belle Fourche.

You got questions. That's why we're here.
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
A breaker trips to protect the wiring. The usual causes are too many devices on one circuit, a short circuit or ground fault, or a breaker that has worn out. If it trips as soon as you reset it, leave it off and have an electrician look at the circuit. Resetting it again and again can hide a problem that is heating the wiring.
Why won't my breaker reset?
A breaker that will not stay on usually still has a fault on its circuit, or the breaker itself has failed. Unplug everything on that circuit and try once. If it still trips, stop resetting it and call an electrician. Never tape or force a breaker to stay on.
Why did half my house lose power?
Losing power to half of the home often points to a problem with one leg of the incoming service, a failed main breaker or a loose connection in the panel. Check whether your neighbors are dark too, and if they are, call the power company. If it is only your home, leave the panel alone and call an electrician.
Why is my outlet not working, or my GFCI won't reset?
A dead outlet is often tied to a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit, such as in a bathroom, garage or kitchen. Press reset on those first. If a GFCI will not reset, moisture, a failing device or a wiring fault may be the cause, and it needs a proper repair.
Why are my lights flickering?
One flickering light is often a bulb or a loose fixture connection. Lights that flicker or dim throughout the house can point to a loose connection at the panel or the service, and that is worth a prompt call.
What does a burning smell, buzzing or a hot outlet mean?
Treat these as warnings. Turn off the circuit at the breaker, keep the area clear and do not use the outlet or switch. If you see smoke or flames, call 911 first. Then call an electrician to find the cause before the power goes back on.
Do you repair older homes and panels?
Yes. Many Black Hills homes have older wiring or panels that have reached the end of their service life. We repair what can safely be repaired and will tell you when a panel swap is the better fix.
