For example, we prefer RAB, Maxim, and Cooper for lighting, Schneider Electric for panelboards and breakers, King Wire for SER service entrance cable, and Briggs & Stratton for standby generators because of their track records. Choosing reliable brands, installing them correctly, and inspecting connections during installation are the largest factors in long-term reliability.
So what affects reliability?
- Correct product selection — rated for the application (dimmers, wet locations, IC vs non-IC for recessed cans).
- Proper installation — tight terminations, correct wire size, correct breakers/panels, and good mechanical support.
- Environmental fit — outdoor fixtures must be wet-rated; recessed housings must match insulation conditions.
- Routine maintenance — cleaning fixtures, testing devices, generator oil and battery checks.
